-ford names

Years ago when I wanted to register "Duckford," some SCA heralds were a bit snooty about it, and I started collecting "-ford" names, for fun. Surprised at how many there were, I kept a list on my old computer. It was a Kaypro II and had a daisy-wheel printer. I found them in casual reading and in looking at maps or town names. 224 of these are from that list, and a few others were found later, or I'm adding from little pieces of paper I'm filing/trashing as I go through all my old files.

I post on a few forums as "farmduck" and my cyber identity lives in Duckford, NSW Australia. I live in stately Farmduck Manor in the rolling hills of West Duckfordshire, overlooking the historic village of Duckford-on-Duck.

I'm a keen Rugby League fan and farmduck is the coach of the West Duckford Mallards, who play in the Duckfordshire League, against Duckford Villa, Point Duckford Pintails, Duckford Hotspur and various other teams.

Happy blogging.

Nice! :-)

The name Duckford, last I knew, had only been seen in one document in England. A list of young women working at a certain establishment listed where they were from. All were from that same village, but one wrote "Duckford." At the time I saw that, the author said no one knew where "Duckford" was.

That was some years back. But even then, there were a couple of known athletes in Australia with the last nae of Duckford. So wherever it might have been, more than one person came from there. :-)

There was an estate called Duckford in South Devon near Little Pool. Possibly. as the original large estate was broken up and sold off, the parts were renamed.

Also, what about Castleford?

Here, in Sydney we also have Guildford, Old Guildford, Carlingford, Kingsford and Abbotsford.

I am SO GLAD you posted! Thank you!

I was in Australia for five weeks (first time); just got back three days ago. I saw a sign (I think we were out in the country east of Adelaide somewhere) for a town called Axford? Axeford?

"There is also a superb bakery and Post Office at Frogmore, just 2 miles distant." Ah. Duckford (4.5 acres with a "period" house (18th c?? later? I don't find it saying) is near Frogmore. Nearer to South Pool. :-)

I love these names.
